Tirzepatide

 

Tirzepatide (Brand names Mounjaro and Zepbound) is similar to Semaglutide in that it’s also a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. This means it works by mimicking the effects of GLP-1, thereby enhancing insulin secretion, slowing down the absorption of glucose from the intestines, and reducing the amount of glucose produced by the liver. The medication also blocks ghrelin, your hunger hormone, so you feel fuller throughout the day.  


This means Tirzepatide offers a two-punch approach when it comes to an extra weight loss boost compared to Semaglutide. Tirzepatide is self-administered by a weekly injection. Tirzepatide is often dosed differently than Semaglutide, where your dose is slowly titrated up over 18 weeks until we achieve maintenance dosing. With Tirzepatide people will often start with a low dose and may continue at that low dose or a slightly higher dose, but there is no escalation to maintenance like there is with Semaglutide. 

Semaglutide

 Semaglutide (Brand names Wegovy and Ozempic)

 works by mimicking the effects of GLP-1, thereby enhancing insulin secretion, slowing down the absorption of glucose from the intestines, and reducing the amount of glucose produced by the liver. The medication also blocks ghrelin, your hunger hormone, so you feel fuller throughout the day. Semaglutide helps to lower blood sugar levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes and helps those lose weight with a higher BMI. 


Semaglutide is self-administered by a weekly injection.

With Semaglutide we slowly titrate up your dose over 18 weeks until we achieve maintenance dosing. People will often continue to stay on maintenance dosing to keep their weight the same or often times people will continue to lose weight.
